Big Goals for 2023: A Reflection

Here I am – at the end of 2023. Let’s see how how I did on these goals!

01: Purge 1000 items {Status: 1178/1000}

SUCCESS! I stopped counting at 1178 on Week 30 – but I continued to toss. My life is noticeably less cluttered!

02: Organize the Attic

INCOMPLETE. I organized about 2/3 of the space. All of the boxes match with QR codes that take me to a list of what is in them. I’m confident that I can finish this goal in 2024.

03: Read 100 Books {Status: 52/100}

FAIL. I did, however, read 52 books. I’ll keep this goal for 2024.

04: Try 52 New Recipes {Status: 22/52}

FAIL. But, I enjoyed the concept of this goal. I will likely keep this goal – but, reduce the number. Quality > Quantity, right?

05: Get in Shape

SUCCESS. While I’m not in the shape that I want to be, I am further along than I was 365 days ago. This year I:
– Completed a Peloton workout every single day.
– Cycled > 3000 miles + > 15,000 minutes
– Completed 8 PZ Challenges
– Completed 3 100 Days of Peloton

I’m keeping this goal for 2024, with a twist.

06: Write/Send 52 notes/cards {Status: 11/52}

FAIL. I’m ok with it…

07: Maintain a weekly blog {30/52}

FAIL. Perhaps I will move towards a monthly update for 1024?

08: Organize my mother’s photographs {in progress}

INCOMPLETE. Although, I’m still motivated. Might keep it for 2024.

09: House Projects {15/23}

INCOMPLETE. Not terrible, but needs attention. I’m going to revamp this list for 2024.

Decorate the sunroom: Rearranged. Decluttering is in progress

“One of the great balancing acts in life is to be cautious and daring at the same

“Mistakes are at the very base of human thought, embedded there, feeding the structure like root nodules. If we were not provided with the knack of being wrong, we could never get anything useful done. We think our way along by choosing between right and wrong alternatives, and the wrong choices have to be made as frequently as the right ones.

We get along in life this way. We are built to make mistakes, coded for error. We learn, as we say, by “trial and error.” Why do we always say that? Why not “trial and rightness” or “trial and triumph”? The old phrase puts it that way because that is, in real life, the way it is done.”

“One of the great balancing acts in life is to be cautious and daring at the same time. Cautious enough to avoid stupid mistakes, prevent burnout, and maintain a margin of safety. Daring enough to bet on yourself, to do the things you would regret leaving undone, and to be willing to be uncomfortable in the short term so you can learn and grow in the long term.” – James Clear

How are your goals going?

Cheers, Holly

Big Goals for 2023: Wk 19/52

10 years or 1 hour. Those are the two time frames worth prioritizing.

10 years is shorthand for thinking longer-term than nearly everyone else and doing things that are really ambitious or meaningful. Most of the deeply meaningful things in life require long time horizons: building a business, cultivating a happy marriage, growing a family, getting in the best shape of your life, etc.

How do you work toward the 10-year things? In 1 hour increments. 1 hour is shorthand for doing things that can be accomplished from start to finish in a single session like a good workout, a good writing session, reading a chapter of a book, going on a fun date, etc. The key is that you finish with something accomplished, not with half-work still waiting to be completed.

If you spend 1 hour working toward a 10-year project—and you repeat this day after day—you’re going to end up living a lovely life.

– James Clear

Big Goals for 2023: Wk 17/52

Change is not a bolt of lightning that arrives with a zap. It is a bridge built brick by brick, every day, with sweat and humility and slips. It is hard work, and slow work, but it can be thrilling to watch it take shape. – Sarah Hepola

01: Purge 1000 items {Status: 881/1000}

I cleaned out my swimsuit drawer – and 13 suits were tossed. I now only have items that I love. Maybe dressing in a suit this summer will be less stressful without weeding through choices that I didn’t love anymore.

02: Organize the Attic

Too many weekend commitments this week to spend time in the attic.

03: Read 100 Books {Status: 16/100}

Big Goals for 2023: Wk 16/52

On any given day, you may struggle with your habits because you’re too busy or too tired or too overwhelmed or hundreds of other reasons. Over the long run, the real reason you fail to stick with habits is that your self-image gets in the way. This is why you can’t get too attached to one version of your identity.

Progress requires unlearning. Becoming the best version of yourself requires you to continuously edit your beliefs, and to upgrade and expand your identity.
– James Clear, Atomic Habits

01: Purge 1000 items {Status: 868/1000}

My youngest came come from college this weekend with a carload of items that – although they have been well-loved for an entire year – did not make the cut to return for next year. They are being gifted for others to love!

02: Organize the Attic

Too many outside projects to enjoy!

03: Read 100 Books {Status: 16/100}

I started a physical book – which means that I’m still juggling three books right now. Finishing books has slowed, but I’m enjoying outside reads!
