Big Goals for 2022: Week 8/52

01: Get 6 – 7 Hours of Sleep Each Night [47/49]

This week was better. I’m learning that a good night’s sleep equates to higher productivity the next day. And, caffeine after 5 PM means that high-quality sleep does not happen. So, no more evening caffeine.

02: Purge 1000 items [151/1000]

I cleaned out one drawer of my chest – removing 3 items that I do not love. My daughters joined the game and eliminated another 18 items. It was not a bad week on this goal!

03: Organize the Attic 

No attic trips this week… way too cold!

04: Read 100 Books [9/100]

The current fiction book is taking longer to digest than usual. Also, I’m reviewing a couple of books as a part of my job, so those have bumped pleasuring reading to the side.

My oldest daughter was home from college this weekend, and – after watching a trending TikTok video, she wanted to try Hot Dogs Burnt Ends: hot dogs smoked with butter, brown sugar, and BBQ sauce. While always game for a food adventure, I do not plan to add this recipe to the weekly rotation.

But, my goal for February will be to carve out 30 minutes to exercise every day.

Big Goals for 2022: Week 7/52

75% of the way through February…and I’m running on steam!

01: Get 6 – 7 Hours of Sleep Each Night [40/42]

On two occasions over the last two weeks, I found myself burning the candles at both ends — staying up late to complete projects and waking up early to make an appointment. I paid for those sleepless nights for many days after. This commitment has made me realize how important sleep is to my overall health and positive attitude.

02: Purge 1000 items [128/1000]

I only had time to remove a handful of items this week, as I rearranged a few things in my cabinet. Once Spring Break arrives, I’m taking a deep dive into purging!

03: Organize the Attic 

No attic trips this week… way too cold!

04: Read 100 Books [9/100]

Traveling and projects this week made for a slower progress in my fiction books, and I’m behind in my reading challenge!

Big Goals for 2022: Week 5/52

Today, I am looking at my February calendar while trying to figure out how to fit it all in…

01: Get 6 – 7 Hours of Sleep Each Night [35/35]

I am finding that I need full nights of sleep — I need it to ensure that I have the cognitive bandwidth to complete heavy tasks at work, can effectively problem-solve daily fires, and plan for the days/weeks/months ahead. I’m still not at the point where I am waking up early enough to squeeze in a workout. It’s still a goal!

02: Purge 1000 items [124/1000]

I let go of a few kitchen items and my sister’s wedding album from her first marriage. Seriously, that was 17 years ago. Why did I still have it? I am still digitizing my files… Section H! Regardless of how small, it’s progress.

03: Organize the Attic 

No attic trips this week… way too cold!

04: Read 100 Books [8/100]

I fell asleep in my fiction book several times this week. Clearly, the sleeping goal trumped the reading goal this week.

Big Goals for 2022: Week 4/52

Dear universe: I live at the beach to avoid all cold weather. So, three consecutive Fridays filled with winter storms and snow is more than this flip-flop-wearing girls needs for one winter season!

I definitely hit a 7/7 in this area this week…but, I’m still not at the point where I am waking up early enough to squeeze in a workout. It’s still a goal!

My youngest purged her closet and removed 12 items, and I let go of two items (way overdue). Instead, I am still digitizing my files… I finally advanced to section G! Regardless of how small, it’s progress.

I’m trying to embrace nonfiction reads, but they are going slooooowly.

A 4-day work week turned into a 3-day work week in a snap when the forecast called for 100% chance of snow!

Big Goals for 2022: Week 2/52

I think that I figured out that I am a workaholic because the transition back to the work week is really tough! What a week!

01: Get 6 – 7 Hours of Sleep Each Night [14/14]

I definitely hit a 7/7 in this area this week…but, I’m not at the point where I am waking up early enough to squeeze in a workout. It’s a goal, though!

02: Purge 1000 items [106/1000]

I did not make a lot of progress in this area. Instead, I started on one corner of my study to scrutinize the items that are taking up space. I found myself stuck on a stack of files that need to be digitized…. and, I’m on B (of an alphabetized stack). But, once done, that entire stack will leave my house! Better, I will regain possession of a corner of my room!

03: Organize the Attic 

No attic trips this week… way too cold!

04: Read 100 Books [4/100]

I love to read, and I tend to oscillate between deep nonfiction reads that focus on education, business growth, or personal growth, and entertaining fiction. I’m setting this goal again this year… so please, share your most favorite reads!

Big Goals for 2022: Week 1/52

On January 1, we returned from a family vacation. Mind you, this was a vacation that was originally scheduled for March 2020 — and had been rescheduled multiple times due to the global pandemic and the ever-changing schedules of my now-adult children. However, the stars finally aligned to create a window of time to take the trip. It was absolutely glorious. I had forgotten how much I love a family vacation. And, we took full advantage of warmer weather that allowed most of our time to be spent outside in summer attire.

Admittedly, it was tough to return to a routine – and these lofty goals.

01: Get 6 – 7 Hours of Sleep Each Night [7/7]

I definitely hit a 7/7 in this area this week…but, I’m not at the point where I am waking up early enough to squeeze in a workout. Next week, perhaps?

02: Purge 1000 items [106/1000]

I started out strong in this area by cleaning out two cabinets and three attic bins. The following items left my house: 40 cookbooks (honestly, do people use these anymore?), 41 articles of clothing (all mine!), 2 lamps, 11 dated wall hangings, 2 bags, and 10 bottles of sunscreen. Buh-bye!

03: Organize the Attic 

Each time we make a trip into the attic, I vow to take one bin down and declutter it. In swapping the Christmas decorations, 4 bins came downstairs – and, only two went back upstairs with labels and organized contents.

04: Read 100 Books [3/100]

The worst part of having an early January birthday is that it always happens when everyone realizes that they have overspent and overeaten over the holidays! This year, I elected for quiet dinner at home with a salad from my favorite restaurant, and I saved my weekly “cheat meal” for craft beers with my sister on Saturday night. Simple is best.

Big Goals for 2022

I originally thought that 2020 was a year…but, admittedly, I never saw 2021 coming. Whew. What just happened? While I dropped off of the blogging trail at week 18 last year, I learned that I need the weekly focus of these simple, personal goals more than ever. While 2021 was a year of pivots and changes, I recognize that 2021 was a year of significant change – for my family and for me, professionally. I learned an enormous amount about myself, gained professional knowledge on the fly, and embraced a new professional role and a half-empty nest. With 2022 right here, I am at a crossroads of decisions: What stays in 2021? What new practices from 2021 will join me in 2022?

01: Get 6 – 7 Hours of Sleep Each Night

As I get older, I am shifting from a night owl to a morning person – if, and only if, I get the right amount of sleep! I also find that my most productive time of the day is the morning. I’d love to transition my workouts to the mornings, too. So, my goal is to hit the hay earlier so that I can maximize my physical and mental productivity every morning!

02: Purge 1000 items

In 2021, I removed an enormous amount of STUFF from my house. Clothes, stuffed animals, holiday decor, magazines. You name it, and I had held on to it for no apparent reason. In fact, I even apologized to my husband for packing some items up and moving them into our new home. No more! This year, I tackle the cluttered sunroom and attic! Can I purge 1000 items again? I’m going to try!

03: Organize the Attic 

Once the weather warms up a bit, I hope to finish this task that we started in Fall 2020.

04: Read 100 Books

Big Goals for 2021: Wk 20/52

Psychiatrist Elisabeth Kübler Ross on how beautiful people are made:

“The most beautiful people we have known are those who have known defeat, known suffering, known struggle, known loss, and have found their way out of the depths. These persons have an appreciation, a sensitivity, and an understanding of life that fills them with compassion, gentleness, and a deep loving concern. Beautiful people do not just happen.”

May is a tough month for me for it is filled with memories that are both beautiful and heartbreaking. May brings the anniversary of my mother’s cancer diagnosis, the anniversary of her surgery, and the anniversary of her death. It also brings Mother’s Day, her birthday, and Memorial Day – one of her favorite holidays. This quote speaks to me because it reminds me that suffering, struggle, loss – and the recovery from those spaces – brings appreciation, sensitivity, gentleness, and a deep awareness for those around you. While I still grieve the loss of a life cut short and miss her deeply, I am tremendously thankful to have had her for as long as I did — and I am thankful to have learned so many life lessons from her as an adult and mother.

My youngest daughter cleaned out her dresser – and 47 items left her room! I finally purged the bathroom closet with an embarrassing 85 items leaving. Why do I hold on to things that I obviously do not need?

My kitchen stayed very clean this week…primarily because I did not use it.

07: Get in Shape

While I do feel more physically fit, the scale or the way that my clothes fit does not seem to be moving. I probably need to do some work in the kitchen. Here are some specific action steps that I took this week:

Spring challenge continues this week. I’m enjoying a 70 day streak!

For another week, I closed the Activity Ring every. single. day. There is something quite satisfying about these silly little rings!

I wrapped up Step Bet and won a few dollars. Now, I’m juggling two – which, is still a great motivator to get my daily steps *and* win a little cash!

11: Simplify my life

This week was the crazinest week that I have experienced in a LONG time. Between several work emergencies and projects, we are prepping for the End of the Year (which is always a LOT of work with a long list of little things that are easy to forget)! Plus, this weekend brought Prom for *both* of my girls (and all of the things that accompany Prom like hair, nails, flowers, photos, dinner, dates, After-Prom… And, this weekend, we flipped two beach houses, landscaped three houses, housesat for a friend, chuaffeured a wedding, and graduated from a graduate microcreditional program. Wowsers. I’m tired.

I did not touch this. Ooops.

Big Goals for 2021: Wk 19/52

So, this week was adventurous! Meet Obie!

01: Get 6 – 7 Hours of Sleep Each Night {Status: 126/133}

This was a great week for sleep! And, every day was easy thanks to sleep!

02: Learn Calligraphy

Still sitting in my inbox. One of these days, I’ll get there.

03: Purge 1000 items {Status: 628/1000}

I cleaned out three bookcases – 10 big textbooks and 52 magazines left! I also have a huge pile of clothes to count so I can add them next week.

04: Organize the Attic 

No progress in this area this week.

05: Read 100 Books, including ALL of the DBC books. {Status: 22/100}

I dusted off my library card to download some good beach reads! And, I’m inching my way through my Professional Reads, too! I should wrap up several in May!

Spring challenge continues this week. I’m enjoying a 63 day streak!

For another week, I closed the Activity Ring every. single. day. There is something quite satisfying about these silly little rings!

I’m juggling three StepBets right now! It’s a great motivator to get my daily steps *and* win a little cash!

In simplifying my week, I added a puppy to the family. I know. What am I thinking? I’m thinking that this puppy will remind me to slop down and play!

12: Organize my mother’s photographs {475 scanned}

I scanned and organized about 50 photographs this week. I was able to chip away at more of the boxes! I really want this task complete by December!
