Big Goals for 2023: Wk 04/52

Do one thing per day that compounds. – James Clear

This week, it was tougher to navigate my new fitness commitments. Amidst a house remodel that requires that I shower at my parents’ house and a car accident that reduce our wheels to one vehicle, I struggled with a different schedule. But, I plugged in every day. A few months ago, I would have leaned into the excuses — but, I’m different. I will feed my health every day.

01: Purge 1000 items {Status: 7/1000}

Although I’m not going to count this one in the total (as I replaced it with a different one), I did say “Bye” to a very old, discolored, cracked fiberglass tub/shower and 1970s fixtures. Hello, new tub, fixtures, and glass tile!

02: Organize the Attic

No trips into the attic this week.

03: Read 100 Books {Status: 2/100}

Big Goals for 2023: Wk 03/52

You just need to have the courage to eliminate everything that doesn’t directly feed what you really want. – James Clear

As a wife, mom, and educational leader, I feel like I need to be “on call” 24/7. It has been really difficult to take the time for myself to work out (1 hour each day), pause to eat mindfully, read, and go to bed early without feeling incredibly guilty. I keep reminding myself that I can only give to others when I am my best self…

01: Purge 1000 items {Status: 7/1000}

This challenge might be tougher than I realized. I did, however, eliminate several pairs of shoes this week (after one shoe broke while I was wearing it — I guess I got my money out of that pair!)

02: Organize the Attic

No trips into the attic this week.

03: Read 100 Books {Status: 2/100}

Reading is part of my daily routine, so I kept this goal. It’s a good one.

Big Goals for 2023: Wk 02/52

“Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become. No single instance will transform your beliefs, but as the votes build up, so does the evidence of your new identity.” – James Clear

This is a statement that has driven my actions this week. Every meal, every snack, every glass of water, every workout, and every morning that I wake up is an opportunity to vote for the person that I want to become: healthy. I am also realizing that my mind holds the power – I can think I can or can’t, and both are true. But, what if I actually CAN hold that Zone 6 in Power Zones Training for the entire minute? What if I CAN complete a 45-minute Peloton session? What if I CAN pedal out of the saddle? Funny… when I think I CAN, I actually CAN. Mind over matter, friends.

01: Purge 1000 items {Status: 4/1000}

I did not remove anything this week. However, our bathroom remodel is scheduled for next week – so this number might jump soon!

02: Organize the Attic

Big Goals for 2023: Wk 01/52

I make suggestions. You make decisions.
– Denis, Peloton

Unlike previous years, I stepped into this year recognizing that I would only TRANSFORM myself through consistent work. This week, I showed up – every day, with 100% effort. No, I’m not going ALL IN on every workout. Instead, I am making intentional decisions to balance training with push efforts while adding cool-down rides, stretches, and mindful nutrition at every opportunity.

01: Purge 1000 items {Status: 4/1000}

I only removed a few items this week, so this one is off to a slow start.

02: Organize the Attic

Every trip into the attic is an adventure. We have organized one corner… three corners left.

03: Read 100 Books {Status: 0/100}

Reading is part of my daily routine, so I’m keeping this goal. It’s a good one.

Big Goals for 2023

The difficult I’ll do right now. The impossible will take a little while.
– Billie Holiday

Source: Wintering

As I enter 2023, this quote speaks to me. I have big goals — really big. And, I am committed to making them happen. I expect that these goals will take a while. That’s fine. In the true “Atomic Habits” style, I will strive to improve 1% each and every day, chipping away at the barriers between my goals and me!

01: Purge 1000 items {Status: 0/1000}

I worked tremendously hard on this goal last year, and I saw a huge different in the organization and clarity of my home. I still have several areas in my home that need attention, so I’m keeping this goal for this year.

02: Organize the Attic

I started this goal last year. We organized one corner of the attic (purging along the way), and floored several spots. There is still work to be done, so this goal stays on the list.

03: Read 100 Books {Status: 0/100}

Reading is part of my daily routine, so I’m keeping this goal. It’s a good one.

05: Get in Shape

I’m on a 7 week, 35-day streak with clipping in to “ride the bike” (as Dennis would say). With the new year, I am embracing specific goals in 4-week intervals specific to fitness, health, and wellness. See below:

One Word 2023

OneWord2023. By this point, I’m sure you have seen the social media posts. Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and everyone’s blog are filled with people ringing in the New Year with their #OneWord2023 carefully selected to frame their year. Meghan Markle and other celebrities have embraced this trend. Everyone your turn, people are posting their words – coupled with incredible blogposts and graphics.

Many years ago, I, too, embraced the #OneWord challenge. In fact, I traded lists of New Years Resolutions for #OneWord to drive my decisions and focus my reflection for the entire year. I’ve created artwork, designed screensavers for my phone, and placed my word on a Post-It note on my desk — all deliberate reminders to use it daily.

Previous #OneWord selections include Fearless (2014), Move (2015), Simplify (2016), Intentional (2017), Cultivate (2018), Embrace (2019), Focus (2020), Invest (2021), and Believe (22).

Last year’s selection, BELIEVE, was necessary. As the year unfolded, we faced a multitude of personal and professional milestones. Both of my daughters graduated: the oldest from college and the youngest from high school. I had to BELIEVE that the universe would ensure they made the best decision for their next paths. Professionally, my workplace changed with an avalanche of resignations and new hires. I had BELIEVE in the positivity of change, looking ahead to a bright and innovative future.

2022 was one for the record books.

2023, however, is a different story.

Each year, I wait patiently for the word to find me – in a quote, in a song, in a book that I am reading, or in a conversation. January 1 came and went, and I was still without the perfect word.

I pondered. I researched. I thought. I reflected.

As I folded the last pieces of laundry while listening to a Peloton podcast, the podcaster used this word… aha! That is it!

My #OneWord2023 will be TRANSFORM.

Transformation requires planning, investment, commitment, and work. This year, I vow to TRANSFORM myself – personally, physically, and professionally – that I am capable of the goals that I have set for myself. They are lofty, but I have the time, energy, and skills to crush them.

  • Physically TRANSFORM my body through movement, nutrition, hydration, sleep, and self-care.
  • Personally TRANSFORM me through reading and podcasts.
  • Professionally TRANSFORM the way that our district communicates with stakeholders.
  • Professionally TRANSFORM opportunities for teachers to engage in professional learning.
  • Personally TRANSFORM my home into a place that I love.

I hope that you join me on the journey!

#OneWord2023 Transform.

Cheers to your New Year,
Holly
